After Donald Trump’s unexpected win, popular comedians, many of whom didn’t think he’d actually be elected, throughout the United States (US) wasted no time in disguising their disappointment as jokes.
Comedian John Oliver, in the latest episode of his show ‘Last Week Tonight’, encompassed everything people have been thinking and feeling after Trump became the US President-elect. He managed to address the serious conversation around his election and tickle the funny bones at the same time.
Making his disappointment with the result clear, he said that “instead of telling little girls that they too can become president, we're telling that no grandpa is racist enough to become the leader of the free world.”
He exemplified everything he thought would be wrong in having Trump as the US President. Calling him a “misogynist internet troll”, he said that people should be careful with the “give him a chance” rhetoric lest it feeds into the “normalisation” of his narrative.
He highlighted Trump’s “lies”, saying that people in the country now have to stand up for each other since Obama is no longer going to be there to care about US citizens’ rights.
Ending the video, he echoed the thoughts of everyone not just in US but around the world. He had a message for this year, ‘F**k You 2016’, listing the many things that make 2016 awful.
