Mandeep Singh, a 39-year-old firearms instructor, was the sole breadwinner of his family and was soon to be posted to Bhatinda, which was closer to his home.

He was a native of Seel village in Patiala district of Punjab. Singh had joined the army at the age of 17, right after the completion of his schooling.
