Ruling out a pre-poll alliance with the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) for the assembly elections next month, the Samajwadi Party (SP) on Thursday said it was holding talks with the Congress only.

However, sources said the RLD leadership is still hopeful of a seat-sharing tie-up with the Congress.

SP will not ally with RLD. Talks were going on with only the Congress for the alliance, which is likely to be announced in a day or two. There have been no discussions with the RLD so far.

As the protests against the ban on Jallikattu escalated across Tamil Nadu on Thursday, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Capital, declared that his government would “take steps with the backing of the Centre” to hold the traditional bull-taming sport.

While the state government sought an ordinance “to remove the legal impediments”, Modi expressed his government’s inability to intervene since it is a “sub-judice” matter, but assured his support to steps by the state.

Although Panneerselvam did not elaborate on the “steps” that would be taken, top government sources told The Indian Express in Chennai that the state may pass a law on Friday evening or Saturday, following which the sport could be held in Alanganallur near Madurai — the usual hub of the Jallikattu event — and other villages on Sunday.

Churches do not have power to grant divorce decrees, the Supreme Court held on Wednesday, affirming only civil courts have the jurisdiction to adjudicate matrimonial dispute among Christian couples.

A bench of Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justice DY Chandrachud dismissed 87-year-old Karnataka resident’s petition, saying it is devoid of merits. The ruling means the Indian Divorce Act, 1989 will override the Christian personal law that will not have any power to nullify marriages.

The court order came after Additional Solicitor General Neeraj Kishan Kaul, appearing for the Centre, said the SC had settled the debate in 1996 wherein it was held that Indian courts have the authority to annul Christian marriages.

India wrapped up the ODI series against England with a 15-run win at the Barabati Stadium on Thursday. Set a target of 382, thanks to brilliant centuries by Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, England stayed in the hunt till late into their innings. The short boundaries coupled with heavy dew played their part to help the side batting second.

While promising before the match to spoil India’s party with short balls, Jake Ball actually was the first among the England bowlers to err in line. Yuvraj took centrestage hitting three boundaries between square leg and midwicket in Ball’s first over, Dhoni played second fiddle and the party erupted in the stands.
