Arvind Kejriwal led Delhi Government has moved the Supreme Court to challenge the Delhi High Court‘s 4 August judgement on the sweeping powers of Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor (L-G), Najeeb Jung, after the ruling observed that the L-G is the administrative head of National Capital Territory.

In the ongoing two-year-tussle between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP-led Centre, the Delhi High Court had tilted the balance in favour of the Union government after it dismissed the petition filed by the Arvind Kejriwal government challenging the powers of Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Najeeb Jung.

AAP had challenged the Centre’s notification, dated 21 May 2015, in the Delhi High Court which gave the L-G absolute power in appointing bureaucrats in Delhi. However, the Court ruled against it and added that the government’s contention that the L-G is bound to act on the advice of Council of Ministers was “without substance”.

Earlier on Tuesday, the war between Delhi’s AAP government and L-G Najeeb Jung escalated dramatically as Jung named a three-member team to examine over 400 files submitted to him by the Delhi government since the High Court ruling of 4 August.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal retorted by accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of trying to “destroy” the national capital.

He further went on to immediately put out a series of tweets stating that Modi was “hell bent” on “destroying” Delhi through Jung.
