On Thursday, 14 February, a terrifying suicide bomb attack killed several CRPF jawans – the official death toll is currently as high as 40. Jaish-e-Mohammad claimed responsibility soon after the attack.

But how did this attack happen exactly? What are the government’s options now? Are we expecting more surgical strikes? Can it figure out a diplomatic solution with China which is standing in India’s way in listing JeM leader Masood Azhar as a global terrorist?

  • A CRPF convoy of 78 vehicles, carrying 2,547 CRPF personnel was on their way to Srinagar from Jammu.
  • These jawans were going back to work after their holiday
  • Around 2:30 pm a Mahindra Scorpio with a suicide bomber carrying more than 350 kg of explosives hit the convoy at Awantipora.
  • Two of the CRPF vehicles were badly hit and many jawans lost their lives.

Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad, which is Maulana Masood Azhar's organisation, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

What we know so far is the identity of the suicide bomber. He's a 22-year-old terrorist called Adil Ahmed Dar who had joined Jaish in Class 11. Hours after Jaish identified Adil as one of their terrorist, a video also propped up showing Adil holding rifles seated in front of the Jaish banner.

Now, lots of theories and information have propped up since the attack.

  1. An article in The Print said that this attack could be revenge for the killing of Masood Azhar’s two nephews, who were killed in two separate incidents in 2017 and 2018.
  2. But a report on NDTV is far more concerning. The report saying Jaish had given warnings of the attack two days before it happened – they even reportedly posted a video showing how it would happen.
  3. That is not all. Adil reportedly had been on police's radar, a source from the force confirmed to The Print.

This incident has of course shaken the nation – including politicians from either ends of the political spectrum. PM Modi called it a "dastardly attack" and announced that the army has been given a freehand. Congress President Rahul Gandhi said that his party stands by the jawans and the government.

India, USA, Bangladesh, several other countries even the UN have not only condemned the incident but also said that there cannot be safe havens for terrorism hinting at Pakistan.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the Ministry of External Affairs will ensure complete isolation from the international community of Pakistan. Not only that but India also ticked Pakistan off the Most Favored Nation status. This status is basically given to international trade partner to provide concessions, privileges and immunity in trade agreement. Pakistan in its turn rejected these insinuations for lack of proof.

But the important point to remember here is that China has repeatedly threatened to use its veto power in the UN security council every time India wanted to list Masood Azhar as a global terrorist.
