In one of the worst rounds of armed clashes between the security forces and militants in recent years, the gunfight took place in two places in Shopian district and a third spot in Anantnag district in southern Kashmir on Sunday, 1 April. Thirteen terrorists were killed in the encounter, while four civilians lost their lives. Three army jawans were martyred during the battle.
During the gunfight, a large number of civilians poured out of their homes, leading to more mayhem.
At a press conference, J&K DGP SP Vaid called it one of the biggest counter-offensives in recent times against terror groups operating in the Kashmir Valley.
