With the start of China’s most anticipated national event, the 19th Communist Party Congress on 18 October, President Xi Jinping addressed the meet, stating his visions for the country’s development in the next five years.

With movie releases being put on hold to shutting down a big market in Beijing, Chinese authorities took no chances with the security at the most important political event.

All eyes were on Xi Jinping as he talked about issues surrounding the country. From the Independence of Taiwan, to issues like corruption, military, independence, environment, economy – the Chinese President described how he plans to tackle all issues.

The Communist Party Congress will close on 24 October. Here are the key takeaways from Jinping’s speech:

Taiwan Independence, “One-China” Principle Must Be Maintained

The Chinese President said China has firmly opposed and prevented Taiwan's independence over the past five years. Xi made the comments in a speech at the beginning of a Communist Party congress. China considers self-ruled Taiwan to be a wayward province, to be brought under Beijing's control by force if necessary.

He went ahead and established the fact that any attempt to separate Taiwan from China will be thwarted.

China will safeguard its sovereignty and security and oppose any behaviors that try to separate the country.

Xi further stated that “One-China” principle is to be maintained.

Fight for Corruption “Always On the Road”

China's campaign against corruption has achieved overwhelming momentum, Xi said. Xi has waged a relentless fight against deep-rooted graft since assuming power five years ago, with more than one million officials punished and dozens of former senior officials jailed.

He further added that the corruption fight will "always be on the road".

Corruption is the biggest threat facing the Communist Party. China has zero tolerance for corruption within the ruling Communist Party.

Having warned that rampant graft threatened the legitimacy of the party, Xi has overseen a sweeping crackdown on corruption that has felled numerous high-ranking officials within the party, government and military.

Economic and Financial Reforms

Beijing has called for a greater role for market forces in the economy in order to improve efficiency and develop a more sustainable growth model. Addressing the issue, Jinping said that China will let the market play a decisive role in resource allocation in the economy.

The Chinese President also said China will stick to supply side structural reform and maintain overcapacity reduction and deleveraging efforts.

China will relax market access for foreign investment and expand access to its services sector.

Xi also said that China will deepen market-oriented reform of its exchange rate as well as its financial system, while at the same time strengthening the role of state firms in the economy.

He also said that China supports an open world economy.

China’s development is not a threat to any country and China supports an open world economy.

World-Class Military On the Cards

The Chinese President also stated the importance of a better military and said that he will work towards building a ‘world-class’ military.

China will maintain the principle that houses are for people to live in, not for speculation.

The principle was first introduced by China's top leaders at an economic conference last December, as the country sought to crack down on rampant speculative buying in its property market through a flurry of government curbs.

Following restrictions on internet applications like Facebook and WhatsApp, Jinping also added that China will build a ‘Clean and Clear’ internet space.
