In a shocking incident, a 19-year-old girl jumped to death in China’s Gansu province, as a crowd watched and egged her on.

The girl, Li, had reportedly been experiencing severe depression after being molested by her high school teacher, the Hindustan Times report states.

In the video, that went viral on social media, Li was seen standing on a window pane on the eighth floor of a building and contemplating jumping off, when the crowd gathered below starts clapping, cheering and encouraging her to “jump quickly”, even as personnel from the fire-fighting department attempt to reach her and urge her to get back inside the building.

Two people from the crowd have reportedly been detained by the police, the report adds.

Li had been suffering from depression since 2016, ever since she was allegedly sexually assaulted by her high school teacher, on the pretext of a medical check-up.

Although Li had reported the incident to the police, and the teacher, Wu Yonghou, was detained for ten days, he was released without any charges in March, 2018, after a hearing in the case.

Since the incident, she had tried to attempt suicide four times, the report said, quoting a local Chinese newspaper.

She first took drugs in October and December 2016 and then attempted to jump off a building last May before being saved by the police. This January, she tried again by taking large amounts of anti-depression drugs.

The video, which was uploaded on social media, created massive uproar with viewers aghast at the society’s lack of sympathy for people with mental health issues.
