Nimrita Kumari, a final-year medical student at Bibi Aseefa Dental College, was found dead in her hostel room in Pakistan's Larkana region earlier this week, leading to suspicions over it being a case of suicide.
However, due to pressure from the family of the deceased and activists across Pakistan, a probe was launched to look into different angles.
In the latest update, the police has detained two students, who were her class fellows, Geo TV reported on Thursday, 19 September. The two have been taken into custody after tracing the cell data on her mobile phone.
The investigations in the case picked up after the Sindh government, on Wednesday, requested the Larkana sessions court to conduct a judicial probe into the student’s death after pressure from the civil society members across the province.
Members of various civil society's also demanded the formation of a joint investigation team to probe the death.
Protests Erupt Across Pak, Family Suspicious of Investigation
Geo TV also reported that protesters held rallies in Larkana and marched towards the press club, raising slogans against the dental college administration and demanded justice. Karachi also witnessed similar demonstartions.
The family, according to Dawn, has also said that they wanted an investigation into the suspicious injuries on Nimrita's body. Her brother, speaking to the daily, said that the marks on her body looked like they were inflicted using cable wires and that the injuries on her arms suggested someone was holding her down.
Her uncle, while speaking to Dawn, also demanded an investigation as to why the body was kept in the ICU before the family reached the hospital.

Apart from the family and activists in Pakistan, people on social media also expressed solidarity, demanding a just and extensive investigation into the medical student's death.
Some on social media also promoted protests and demonstrations, urging people to show up in strong numbers.
Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar also joined the online campaign, demanding justice for Kumari.
