Thirteen people died in Thousand Oaks, CA after a shooting inside a bar during a college night – 11 victims, the suspect, and a Sheriff's Sgt who was on the force for 29 years and was set to retire in the next year, said Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean.

Authorities responded to multiple reports of a mass shooting at Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California, on Wednesday, 7 September, reported ABC7.

At least 11 people were shot at, including a responding deputy who later succumbed to injuries. Ventura County Sheriff's spokesperson confirmed that gunman was found dead inside the bar in Southern California.

The Sheriff identified the suspected gunman as 28-year-old Ian David Long, AP reported. According to the ABC7, a witness confirmed that he had started throwing smoke grenades, and AP reported a witness saying that he had been wearing a black hoodie.

The gunman first fired on a person working the door, and then open fired at random at the people inside.

US President Donald Trump offered condolences in a tweet and said that he has been briefed about the incident.

Witnesses confirmed that many of those inside were college students, as Wednesdays are college nights, according to the Borderline bar’s website, AP reported.

The VC Star reports that four ambulances arrived on the scene to treat multiple victims at the bar.

VC Star reported that about 30 shots were fired, and that even as officers were responding, additional shots were being fired.
