As many as 45 more Indians have been detained for allegedly entering the US border illegally, reported Hindustan Times on Friday, 22 June. This addition now takes the total number of detainees to nearly 100.

The new group is being held at a federal detention centre at Otero in New Mexico state, the report stated. This is the second such episode to be reported this week. Earlier in the week, it came to light that 52 Indians were being held in a federal prison in Oregon, reported The Hindu. They have reportedly been at the centre for a few weeks, having illegally entered US through the Mexican border.

Hindustan Times said that the Indian embassy in Washington had confirmed that Indians were being held at the Otero facility. The number given by the US authorities is“40 to 45”, they said. An official from the Indian consulate in Houston will be visiting the detainees on Tuesday, 26 June.

The US agencies handling immigration do not automatically notify diplomats of the countries from where the detainees come. Indian officials heard of the matter from community leaders and approached the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), reported The Hindu.

A spokesperson for ICE said that the organisation did not have a ready account of how many Indians are being held at centres across the US, although the number is currently close to 100 and will rise as more knowledge of detentions emerge.

On Wednesday, 20 June, President Donald Trump ended his administration’s policy of separating children from families illegally crossing over. However, this will not affect Indians as most of those illegally crossing the border are single men allegedly seeking political asylum in the US, a source familiar with the developments told The Hindu.
