CLAIM

A viral image on social media shows a man sitting with some children and is being circulated with the claim that the man is a Rohingya Muslim who has three wives, eight children and a Samsung 7 C7 pro mobile worth Rs 29,000. The claim along with the video reads:

दिल्ली में रोड के किनारे रहने वाला एक लाचार असहाय बेसहारा गरीब रोहिंग्या मुसलमान (बांगलादेशी ) जिसके पास खाने और पहनने तक को कुछ नहीं है बस तीन बीबियां जिसमें दो गर्भवती हैं 8 बच्चे हैं और एक सस्ता सा घटिया वाला सैमसंग 7 C7 pro मोबाइल है जिसकी कीमत मात्र 29000 रुपये है.

(Translated: A helpless poor Rohingya Muslim (Bangladeshi) living on the side of a road in Delhi, who does not have anything to eat or wear, only has three wives out of which two are pregnant, has eight children and one cheap Samsung 7 C7 pro mobile which costs Rs 29000 only)

Several social media users have shared the image on Facebook and Twitter with the same claim.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The claim made with regard to the image is untrue. The man has two children and one wife and not eight children and three wives.

The article carries the same viral image and mentions that it is from the fire that broke out at the Darul Hijart camp in Delhi in April 2018. The image has been credited to Debayan Roy. He confirmed to The Quint that the claim around the viral image is completely false.

“The man in the picture has two children and one wife. The wife was ailing and his son had burns on his hand. The children seen around him in the picture are not his children but from the refugee camp. The phone in his hand is definitely not his. There was a Sikh Trust who was distributing food and a person from the trust just gave the phone to him to hold for a while. If I remember correctly, after I was done clicking the picture, he gave the phone back to that person from the Trust.”

Darul Hijrat camp is a makeshift settlement which is reportedly home to over 54 Rohingya families. The camp is situated near Kalindi Kunj.

The Quint had earlier reported the incident in which 50 shanties in the area were burnt down that affected 228 people, as per the fire department. No casualties were reported.

Several other media outlets such as Scroll, NDTV and The Times of India had covered the same incident.
