The second lunar mission under Indian Space Research Organisation, Chandrayaan 2, worth Rs 800 crore is said to be cheaper than Christopher Nolan’s Hollywood sci-fi biggie ‘Interstellar’ which had costed Rs 1,062 crore ($165 million), reported The Times of India.

However, this is not the first time ISRO has beat Hollywood in terms of cost effectiveness. The Mars mission launched in 2013 was cheaper than another Hollywood sci-fi ‘Gravity’ released in the same year.

While the mission costed Rs 470 crore, the George Clooney starer had a budget of Rs 644 crores ($100 million).

Talking about the frugal nature of its space missions, ISRO chairman Dr K Sivan told The Times of India, "Simplifying the system, miniaturising the complex big system, strict quality control and maximising output from a product make our space missions frugal and cost-effective.”

Explaining their efforts to cut down on cost, he further said:

We keep strict vigil on each and every stage of development of a spacecraft or a rocket and, therefore, we are able to avoid wastage of products, which helps us minimise the mission cost.

Allthough the tentative date for the launch of Chandrayaan 2 is in April, ISRO chairman said the final decisions will be taken after considering the relative position of the moon with respect to the Earth.

He said that if the mission does not launch in April, the next appropriate time will be in November because they are attempting for a perfect dawn-to-dusk landing which is not possible between April and November.

“If we launch between April and November, we won't get the perfect dawn-to-dusk landing and experiment time due to moon eclipses, therefore, we will avoid the launch in between,” Sivan said.

He said the perfect time for the launch comes only once in a month.

The baby girl, who we will refer to as 'Chhutki', was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old cousin when her parents were away. She has been discharged from AIIMS hospital after undergoing three surgeries, but needs more medical treatment in order to heal completely. Her parents hail from a low-income group and have stopped going to work so that they can take care of the baby. You can help cover Chhutki's medical expenses and secure her future. Every little bit counts. Click here to donate.)
