Islamic State militants have claimed responsibility for an attack on a Shi’ite mosque in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.

According to a witness, identified only as Ahmed, a car exploded near the mosque, killing four people.

A statement by Islamic State was posted on Twitter.

The post named the suicide bomber who carried out the attack as Abu Jandal al-Jizrawi.

The attack targetted worshippers in al-Anoud mosque during Friday prayers, a ministry spokesperson told Saudi state news agency SPA.

The authorities claim that the attack could not achieve its target but the Tweet, reportedly, said the attacker had managed to reach his target despite heightened security.

Similar IS attacks took place in Iraq last week.
