Police shot a white tiger that broke loose from a zoo in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi following severe floods over the weekend. Police say the tiger killed a man and injured another.

Police cordoned off the area near a warehouse where the tiger was hiding.

“It was a white tiger, a big one. It attacked a man, it seized him by the throat,” a witness was quoted as saying in the Daily Mail.

The victim, the owner of a textile plant, was killed when he along with three other colleagues entered the company warehouse today, said the report.

Authorities said several dangerous zoo animals were still on the loose in the city.

Although most animals had been rounded up, locals were advised to use caution and call an emergency number if they came across any bears, tigers, lions or leopards that might still be at large.

“It’s difficult to say how many animals are still roaming the streets,” Tbilisi zoo director Zurab Gurielidize said.

A government official said police would try to subdue the animal if possible “but would have to shoot it if there is threat to human life”.
