CLAIM
A video of Donald Trump’s float is being circulated on social media with a claim that the Americans displayed their disapproval against Trump’s decision of taking out money from the monetary fund by protesting and kicking Trump’s float.
The caption in Hindi reads: "अमेरिका के मुद्रा कोष से रकम निकालने पर अमेरिका की जनता ने ट्रम्प का यह हाल किया, काश, भारतीय लोग इनसे कुछ सिखते ।”
The video has been widely shared on Facebook by multiple users. The Quint received the query from a reader for verification.
WHAT IS THE TRUTH?
The video hasn’t been manipulated in any way, but the claim with which it is being shared is not true. The video is from ‘Fremont Solstice Parade 2017’. The Fremont Solstice Parade is organised to celebrate the longest day of the year.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
We broke the video into frames and reverse searched each frame. The result shows that the video is from ‘Fremont Solstice Parade’ of 2017.
One of the tweets we came across, uploaded in December 2018, said that it was the Trump float at the ‘Fremont Solstice Parade 2017’.
We searched the keyword ‘Fremont Solstice Parade 2017’ and found the website Fremont Arts Council. In the website, the council extends an invitation to Americans every year in the month of June to celebrate the longest day of the year.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, an online newspaper and former print newspaper based in Seattle, carried photos from the June 2017 event. We came across a photo of the same float on its website which was credited to Grant Hindsley.
On further investigation we found an article of 17 June 2017 in the San Francisco Chronicle, an American newspaper titled, ‘Solstice parade thrills, amuses, titillates in Seattle’.
A longer version of the same video is attached to the article and it doesn’t report any protest against Trump. The video shows an atmosphere of festivity and Americans celebrating. Several people are shown to be enjoying the day with creative floats, one of which happens to be that of Trump.
