CLAIM

A video that shows a crowd of people violently attacking and breaking windshields and windows of passing cars has been shared as showing Muslims in the UK's Birmingham rioting for the road to be closed so that they can break their fast during Ramazan.

The Quint answered several queries regarding this video on its WhatsApp helpline.

The video was viral on Facebook and Twitter around the same time last year too.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The video is neither from Birmingham nor does it show, as it claims, Muslims rioting on the streets.

A reverse image search of key-frames from the video led to several articles about the video, which revealed that the incident actually took place in Basel, Switzerland, and not in the UK.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

According to local news reports, a football match between clubs Basel and Lucerne had led to clashes on the night of 19 May 2018, injuring at least two people. Over 90 people were reported to have been involved in the clashes and the police had arrested two people.

The reports further state that the clashes had initially taken place between the two groups, clad in black and in white, and had then spilled over to motorists and other passersby on the road.

This video was debunked by several media organisations earlier last year.

Yet, it appears to have gained traction again this year ahead of Ramazan.
