2013 Video Passed Off as That of Recent Mumbai Building Collapse

CLAIM

A video is being circulated on social media with the claim that it is a clip from the recent building collapse in Mumbai’s Dongri area. The Facebook page of A99News Voice Of India shared the video with the caption, “Dongri Building Collapse Update 12 dead other injured person shifted to hospital. Live Video”.

The video received an engagement of 41,000 views and 1,200 shares till the time the article was written.

While several social media users have shared the video on Facebook and Twitter with a similar claim, a Twitter user has shared the video claiming that it is Mumbai’s JJ building collapse.

WHAT’S THE TRUTH?

While it’s true that a building by the name of Kesarbai collapsed in Mumbai’s Dongri area on Tuesday, 16 July, the video circulating on social media is not related to the incident.

This video is from 2013 when a building collapsed in Thane’s Mumbra area.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

Out of the videos shared by social media users, when we performed reverse image search on one the videos, the search suggested that the video is from Mumbra building collapse in Mumbai.

Consequently, we did a YouTube search using keywords ‘mumbra building collapse in mumbai,’ which led us to a NDTV video that was uploaded on 22 September 2013.

The viral video can be seen in the NDTV bulletin which reported that the incident took place when the four-storey ‘Banoo apartments’, in which 42 families lived, collapsed in Mumbra, Thane.

According to a Mumbai Mirror report, the death toll reported then was three and the Mumbra police had arrested the builders Mohammed Akil Shaikh and Shakil Shaikh.

DID A BUILDING COLLAPSE IN MUMBAI’S DONGRI?

On Tuesday, 16 July, the four-storey building located in Tandel street collapsed in Mumbai’s Dongri area, in which 14 people died (this was the death around the time the article was written), including the owner of the building.

This video, however, is not from this incident.
