Bringing a long-awaited respite from the heat, monsoon finally set in over Delhi on Tuesday, 13 July, with the National Capital witnessing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in several parts.

The rain also led to waterlogging in some parts of the city, including the AIIMS flyover, news agency ANI reported.

After a delay of five days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, the Southwest Monsoon covered the entire country on Tuesday, including the remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

"Southwest monsoon advanced into Delhi on Tuesday, 13 July," the Indian Meteorological Department confirmed in a tweet.

The onset of monsoon in Delhi is over 16 days behind usual date of onset, making it the most-delayed in 19 years, as per IMD.

On Tuesday morning, the IMD predicted that a thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain would occur over Delhi and its adjoining areas, including Gurugram, Bahadurgarh, Noida, Loni Dehat and Faridabad.

"Thunderstorms with light to moderate intensity rain and winds with speed of 20-40 Km/h would occur over and adjoining areas of few places of South-West Delhi, South Delhi ( Jafarpur, Dwarka, Palam, Ayanagar, Deramandi), NCR ( Gurugram, Manesar, Ballabhgarh), Rohtak, Meham, Jhajjar, Farukhnagar, Nuh, Sohana, Palwal (Haryana) Kasganj (UP) during next two hours."

Madhavan Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), noted that while the monsoon conditions had been prevailing in the national capital over the last few days, the weather agency had been waiting for rainfall to declare the onset of monsoon.

He further noted that rainfall had been observed in the areas adjoining the Capital city over the last few days.

IMD's incorrect predictions were attributed to failure of numerical models, PTI reported.

On 13 June, IMD had predicted that the monsoon would cover Delhi and nearby parts by 15 June. On 5 July, it had said that the monsoon would reach Delhi by 10 July.
