Wishes poured in for Sonia Gandhi on Sunday, 9 December, as the UPA chairperson turned 72.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to wish Gandhi a “long and healthy life.”

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee too wished Gandhi on Twitter.

Trinamool Congress sources told PTI that Banerjee is likely to leave for New Delhi in the afternoon and meet Sonia Gandhi later in the day.

“My best wishes on your birthday Sonia Gandhi Ji. I pray for your long life and happiness in all you do,” Banerjee tweeted.

In the national capital, Banerjee is likely to meet leaders of political parties opposed to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for talks on the proposed joint front for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav called her an “inspiration for all.”

Former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah wished Gandhi “a long life in the service of the nation.”

SP leader and Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav too took to Twitter to wish Gandhi.

Congress Leaders, Ministers Wish

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, while wishing Gandhi, credited her with successfully upholding the legacy of the Congress party.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, too posted a nostalgic picture of him with Gandhi.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, too, wished her good health.

Sonia Gandhi took over as the party leader in 1998, seven years after her husband and former Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi’s assassination, and remained in office for a record nineteen years.

Born near Vicenza, Italy, Gandhi was raised in a Roman Catholic Christian family. After completing her primary education at local schools, she moved to Cambridge for higher education and married Rajiv Gandhi in 1968.
