Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal addressed the media on Monday, 6 January, after the Election Commission announced the schedule for the upcoming Assembly elections.

“Vote for us only if you think we have worked in the last five years,” Kejriwal said, adding that elections will be fought over education, health, electricity, roads, water and safety of women.

The Delhi Assembly elections will be held on 8 February, while the counting of votes will take place on 11 February.

All the 70 seats will go to polls in a single phase.

The current Assembly’s term will expire on 22 February.

Briefing the media, CEC Sunil Arora said around 90,000 officials will be deployed for the elections, adding that polling to be held in 13,750 polling stations.

The Model Code of Conduct for Delhi will be applicable with immediate effect, Arora said.

The current Assembly’s term will expire on 22 February.

The last date of nomination for the polls is 21 January, while the scrutiny of nominations will be on 22 January.

Meanwhile, the last date of withdrawal of nomination is 24 January.

‘Election Will Be Fought Over Work Done’

Soon after the EC announced the election schedule, Kejriwal tweeted, “This election will be fought on the basis of work done.”

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar also addressed the media along with Delhi BJP Chief Manoj Tiwari.

Javadekar hit out at Kejriwali and said the elections in Delhi will be fought on the basis of performance, and not “lies and hollow talks.”

In 2015, the elections were held on 7 February and results were announced three days later. The Aam Aadmi Party had won 67 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party had got three seats. The Congress, on the other hand, had failed to open its account.

The current Assembly’s term will expire on 22 February.

A total of 1.46 crore voters can exercise their franchise in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, according to the final electoral list.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Delhi Ranbir Singh said the final publication of voters list shows there are total 1,46,92,136 voters in Delhi including 80.55 lakh males and 66.35 lakh females.

He, however, said people may still apply to get themselves registered as voters in Delhi.
