Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu and former Olympian and former Akali Dal MLA Pargat Singh joined the Congress party on Monday at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting. Sidhu had quit the BJP in October.
The announcement of Pargat and Kaur joining the party was made in presence of senior Congress leaders, including party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.
Pargat and Kaur met the Congress high command in New Delhi last week to seal the deal. Later, both met Punjab Congress President Captain Amarinder Singh and discussed the formalities of joining the party.
Elections to the Punjab assembly are likely to be held early next year.
Congress Calls Demonetisation ‘Disastrous’
At the event, Surjewala reiterated the Congress’ stance on the Narendra Modi government’s demonetisation decision.
Cornering PM Modi, Surjewala called the move “disastrous”. Surjewala said that the PM has not only brought the country to a standstill but also “has battered India’s economy and it will be difficult to regain India’s growth story.”
