The long-awaited landmark tax reform, the GST, is slowly but surely inching towards achieving the two-thirds support it needs for passage through Rajya Sabha – if the parties supporting the current bill and those that are slowly inching towards support of the bill are counted together.

With 163 MPs in support in a House with an effective strength of 229, the GST could currently have the backing of 71 percent of members, reports The Times of India.

Though Congress has the numerical strength of preventing passage of the legislation, support from AIADMK – that is said to be abstaining from a vote at the moment – could ease its approval.

Home to a strong manufacturing base, Tamil Nadu fears loss of revenue, but sources in the report are hopeful that given NDA’s cordial relations with CM J Jayalalithaa, AIADMK will at least abstain if it doesn’t back the bill, helping Arun Jaitley’s dream of seeing the GST bill become a reality.

To add support to NDA’s bid for the passage of the bill, the Left has also indicated its willingness to help the GST bill pass through during recent meetings between Kerala CM Pinnarayi Vijayan and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
