CWC Meet: 3 Resolutions Passed As Sonia Becomes Interim Chief

After weeks of deliberation over the resignation of Rahul Gandhi from post of Congress President, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Saturday, 10 August appointed UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi as the interim chief of the party.

The CWC passed three resolutions on Sonia Gandhi being appointed interim chief till the AICC elects a regular president, on Rahul Gandhi's contribution as party chief and on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Here are the details of the resolutions:

Resolution 1: Sonia Gandhi is New Interim Chief

According to the first resolution, the CWC unanimously resolved to request Sonia Gandhi to take over as interim chief pending the election of a regular president by the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Rahul Gandhi was requested to stay on as the party chief, however, he declined to withdraw his resignation, it said.

Resolution 2: Expressing Gratitude Towards Rahul Gandhi

A second resolution said that the CWC places on record its profound sense of appreciation and gratitude for the exceptional leadership provided by Rahul Gandhi as Congress president.

“Rahul Gandhi led the party with unbounded drive, fierce determination and dedication,” the resolution said.

“Rahul Gandhi's instinctive moral compass is evident from the manner in which he has taken personal responsibility for the disappointing performance of the party in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, thereby setting new standards of accountability in public life,” it said.

Resolution 3: Situation in J&K

A third resolution on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir was also adopted by the Congress' top decision-making body, Congress general secretary organisation K C Venugopal and party's chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala announced.

The CWC on Saturday appointed UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi as the interim chief of the party.

“The Congress working committee expresses serious concern over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir including reports of clampdown and news blackout,” it said.

The Congress working committee calls upobn the Government to act in a transparent fashion and forthwith permit a delegation of opposition parties in Jammu & Kashmir,” it added.
