With a landslide victory, the BJP secured 61 seats in the Mira Bhayander civic body polls that were held on 17 August. The party managed to remain far ahead of ally Shiv Sena, which won the second highest number of seats – 22.

The Opposition, however, performed poorly. The Congress secured only 10 seats, while the Sharad-Pawar led NCP won no seats this time.

How Did The Other Parties Fare?

The result comes as a huge blow to the NCP as they had won 27 seats in the 2012 polls, coming second to the BJP that had won 29 seats. Congress, too, faced a massive blow by losing nine seats.

Raj Thackeray’s MNS too failed to bag any seat this year. In 2012, they had won one seat.

Despite securing eight more seats this time, Shiv Sena remained far from catching up with its ally. Following the strategy executed during the BMC polls, both Shiv Sena and the BJP contested the Mira Bhayander civic polls independently.

With this, the BJP will elect its own Mayor and Deputy Mayor, besides capturing all other important posts in the new house, reported IANS. Mira Bhayander is a flourishing township in Thane district with a large concentration of Muslims.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took to Twitter to express his joy and congratulate his party. He said the victory is because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP’s wave of "vishwas and vikas."

509 candidates from various parties contested the election for 95 seats in the Mira Bhayander corporation. With heavy rain lashing Mumbai, only 47 percent voters turned out to vote.

BJP had secured 29 seats in the 2012 elections.
