Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday, 3 December, called for the resignation of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for his “inaction” in the Nirav Modi-PNB scam.

Citing The Indian Express’ report, the Congress president said that the Income Tax department had red-flagged the evidences pertaining to the massive fraud and the PM Modi-led government had evidence to arrest Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi.

Accusing Jaitley’s daughter for being hired as Choksi’s lawyer, Gandhi in his tweet wrote, “FM Jaitlie must resign immediately.”

‘Modi, Jaitley Directly Responsible’

Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that the Modi government was directly responsible for this "loot”.

“The 10,000-page report was submitted by the Income Tax department to Modi government and the finance ministry on June 7, 2017. The finance minister, the Revenue Secretary Hansmukh Adhia, the CBDT Chairman Sushil Chandra did not share this report either with the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED) or the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence .... This was done so that so that Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi would be able to escape comfortably after looting India. PM Modi and Arun Jaitley are directly responsible for this.”

CBDT Chairman, Revenue Secretary’s Role

Apart from the PM and the FM, Surjewala also attacked attacked the CBDT Chairman Sushil Chandra and Revenue Secretary Hansmukh Adhia.

“Sushil Chandra served as Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax in Gujarat. PM Modi got him here and made him CBDT member first, and the chairman later. Despite his term getting over, PM gave him two extensions. Along with Modi and Jaitley, what was Chandra’s role in letting Nirav Modi and Choksi flee from India?”

Surjewala also referred to BJP MP Subramanian Swamy’s allegation that Hansmukh Adhia had close relations with the fugitive Mahul Choksi. “Neither the FM nor the PM have answered this. Hope, Modi will answer this in Rajasthan,”he said.

The Congress MLA also attacked Arun Jaitley saying his daughter and son-in-law, both lawyers, allegedly received a retainership of Rs 24 lakh from Mehul Choksi.
