Woman’s Funeral Delayed as PM Modi’s Pune Visit Occupies Policemen

No police personnel was available for four hours since most were on security duty ahead of PM Modi’s visit in Pune.

A woman’s funeral in Maharashtra's Kasarwadi was delayed by four hours on Sunday, 16 December due to absence of policemen for pre- and post-mortem ‘panchnama’ procedure.

According to a report by The Indian Express, the policemen were posted on security for Prime Minister Modi's visit to Pune on Tuesday, 18 December.

An investigative officer is required to draw inquest ‘panchanama’ under section of 174 of Criminal Procedure Code, if any person dies under suspicious circumstances or as a result of crime, states Maharasthra Judicial Academy.

The deceased B Chaudhary's body was brought to Kasarwadi on Sunday around 8 am after she went through treatment in a Gujarat hospital. The body of the 47-year-old was taken to the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital in Pune for a post-mortem and crematorium pass, but the process was delayed by four hours.

No police personnel came to the hospital before 12 pm.

“The hospital staff threw their hands up…they said they cannot do anything till police perform the panchnama.”

Jayant Kariya, another resident, said that “The family was already in shock. There was a delay of more than four hours before the funeral ceremony could be performed. Several relatives and friends had gathered at the hospital since early morning.”

However, Satish Patil, the Assistant Police Commissioner, told The Indian Express, that a police personnel was sent to the hospital immediately.

The police constable who gave the ‘panchnama’ said that he was asked to rush to the hospital.
