Who Is Rajni Kant Mishra – Potential Candidate for Next CBI Chief?
Despite the second meeting of the High-Powered Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Panel on the selection of the new CBI chief remaining inconclusive, sources in the know informed PTI that the government could be planning to announce a name soon enough.
The contenders for the CBI’s top seat include senior IPS officers of 1984 batch, Rajni Kant Misra, Javeed Ahmed and SS Deswal, the report added.
Out of these names, Rajni Kant Mishra, who was appointed as the Director General of the Border Security Force by the Cabinet Committee on Appointments on 27 October 2018, has an impressive portfolio detailing his time in service, which could make him one of the strongest contenders for the coveted position.
Here’s all you need to know about the BSF Chief.
Mishra was born on 2 August 1959 in Patna (Bihar), and holds a post-graduate in Geology, reported Force, a national security and aerospace news magazine.
In the early days of his service as a 1984-batch IPS Officer, he served in Lucknow, Allahabad, Kanpur, Dehradun and several other districts of Uttar Pradesh. Before formally joining the Border Security Forces (BSF), Mishra underwent a number of in-service courses, such as Mid-Career Training Programme (MCTP) Phase-5 that he completed in London, the report added.
Mishra assumed the role of Inspector General, BSF of Tripura and South Bengal Frontier on 16 April 2013. Later, he also served as Inspector General (Adm) FHQ BSF, the report said.
From SSB Chief to BSF Chief
A few years after this, Mishra was appointed as the Additional Director General of Border Security Force (BSF), PTI reported. He was still carrying out this role, when his position was ranked higher up and he was selected as the Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), succeeding Archana Ramasundaram – the the first ever woman chief of any central armed police force – on 30 September 2017.
Almost a year later, on 27 September 2018, Mishra was appointed as the Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF), while IPS officer SS Deswal took over as the SSB Director General.
According to an official order issued by the Personnel Ministry, PTI reported, Mishra was tasked to head the BSF for a period up to his superannuation on 31 August 2019 in place of retired officer KK Sharma.
While the selection panel led by Narendra Modi will meet again to take a final call on the new CBI Chief after former CBI Director Alok Verma was ousted from his post due to allegations of bribery, Mishra appears a strong candidate to take up the role.
