The Vice Chancellor of Jaunpur’s Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University courted controversy on Friday, 28 December, by suggesting that students murder the person who gets into an argument with them, while assuring that the “rest will be taken care of” by him.

As the video went viral, the Vice Chancellor issued a clarification and said that his statement was being distorted by the media, reported Hindustan Times.

My statement was intended at motivating students and boosting their confidence. I also tried to inculcate zeal and encouraged them towards their goals. Fighting for one’s right, if he is correct, is not wrong.
Rajaram Yadav, Vice Chancellor

In a video of the speech, that has since gone viral, Yadav can be seen saying: “Yuva chhatra wahi hota hai jo parvat ki chattano me pair maarta hai to paani ki dhaar nikalti hai… Usi ko chhatra kahte hain… Chhatra apne jeevan me sankalp leta hai usko apni aakho se sankalp ko poora karta hai… Usi ko Purvanchal Vishwavidyalaya ka chhatra kahte hain (young student is the one who brings out water from rock just with a kick. When students of the Purvanchal university pledge something, they complete it with their eyes).”

Agar aap Purvanchal Vishwavidyala ke chhatra ho to rote hue mere paas kabhi mat aana.. Ek baat bta deta hu… Agar kisi se jhagda ho jaaye to uski pitai karke aana.. Aur tumhara bas chale to uska murder karke aana… Iske baad hum dekh lenge (If you are Purvanchal University’s students then never come crying to me. I tell you one thing. If you ever get into an argument with someone then come back after beating him up. And if you can, then come back after murdering the person. I would take care of it later),” Yadav added.

UP Minister Sidharth Nath Singh told ANI that the Purvanchal V-C's statement was wrong.

“... he can’t make such comments. He should teach students the way of peace but he’s doing ‘gunda raj’, VC of such mentality has no right to stay in his position. I hope Deputy CM will take appropriate action,” Nath Singh said.

Meanwhile, former Union Minister of State Swami Chinmayanand demanded that Yadav be removed from his post. He said that the V-C has no right to continue in office at such a big university.

BJP MP KP Singh also condemned Yadav's inflammatory speech, Amar Ujala reported. He also demanded action against the V-C.

Many legislators have also described this statement as objectionable, the report added.
