Army jawans have been practising for the Army Day celebrations to be held at India Gate on 15 January. Thursday’s practice session turned fatal for three jawans as they fell from a helicopter while performing rehearsing a slithering operation.

Three jawans were injured during the practice for Army Day. The incident is said to have occurred due to a helicopter boom malfunction.

The Indian Army told ANI that all three jawans are safe and out of danger. Meanwhile, an investigation has been ordered to look into how the accident took place.

The jawans were using the slithering rope to exit the helicopter when the rope broke. The first jawan reached the ground safely, but as the third and last jawan started his climb, the rope broke, taking the three who were still on it, down.

Army Day is celebrated on 15 January on the anniversary of Lieutenant General KM Cariappa taking over as Indian Army’s first Commander-in-Chief, taking over from British General Sir Francis Butcher.
