CLAIM

A video posted on Twitter by one Akshay Singh shows a crowd of people watching a big screen, where scenes from IAF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman's handover by Pakistan to India on Friday, 1 March, appear to be playing out.

The crowd is seen screaming and jumping, throwing the food they are holding into the air. The video had over 80 retweets and 120 likes at the time of writing this article, and was viewed nearly 1.6k times.

Singh's Twitter bio describes him as BJP IT and SM Incharge for Kolkata. He is also followed by BJP National President Amit Shah.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The video is false. It is quite apparent that the visuals of Abhinandan on the screen are morphed, as the screen appears to wobble and move separately from the TV as the video plays.

WHAT WE FOUND

The clip also carries a logo that reads "Sparta Yoshi", with the Youtube logo next to it.

A search on Youtube for the keywords "Crowd cheering + Sparta Yoshi" led us to the original video – uploaded on the channel on 30 November 2018.

This video showed the crowed cheering as a 'DVD Video' logo bounced off the screen's four corners.

When we broke down this video in turn and conducted a reverse image search of the keyframes, we chanced upon a Reddit thread on the video, where one user pointed out that the original video could have been from either the Euro Cup finals or a World Cup match.

When we searched Youtube again with the keywords "England scoring World Cup + crowd cheering", we found the original video of the incident, which was published on 16 June 2016.

The description claims that the video was from the Ashton Gate stadium, where fans watching the Euro 2016 cheered to celebrate "Daniel Sturridge's late winner for England against Wales."

This video has now been morphed to make it seem as though a crowd was cheering for Abhinandan as he returned to India after spending three days in Pakistani custody.
