Registering on the Aadhaar database can help an individual avail government subsidies he or she is eligible for.

When an individual registers for an Aadhaar number, information about them (including biometric information in the form of fingerprints and iris scans) gets registered in the Aadhaar database. Each person who registers for Aadhaar gets a unique 12-digit number, which you can get printed in the form of an Aadhaar card.

Note: The Supreme Court on 26 September 2018 delivered its verdict on the constitutionality of Aadhaar. The five-judge bench held that Aadhaar card cannot be made mandatory for all services. Private entities cannot make Aadhaar linking or authentication mandatory.

The court upheld Aadhaar-PAN linking for Income Tax Returns (ITR) but the deadline for this has been extended by the government of India. Aadhaar can be made mandatory for government benefits, subsidies and welfare schemes but no person can be deprived of any benefit/subsidy/welfare scheme if they do not have Aadhaar.
