Still think you need a boardroom to bag that business deal?

Amul offered the Indian Railways a business deal on Twitter

Striking business deals in boardroom meetings are a thing of the past. The Indian Railways and dairy giant Amul played the digital game, and walked out with a shiny new deal.

Amul (@Amul_Coop) reached out to the Indian Railways (@RailMinIndia) on Twitter on 23 October, enquiring about refrigerated parcel vans.

Amul asked if these vans could be used to transport their popular butter across the country.

Over the last few years, the Indian Railways has garnered praise for its effective use of the social media. And while the Railways is known for its prompt response to passenger woes, this would perhaps be the first instance it has accepted a business proposition on the micro-blogging website.

It accepted the deal within six hours, signing the deal off with "IR will be utterly butterly delighted to get the taste of India to every Indian."

Both Indian Railways and Amul set up a meeting on Twitter and met in Anand, Gujarat on 24 October.

Things quickly went from chatty to business-only.

Still think you need a boardroom to bag that business deal?

Wait! What is the Deal Exactly?

The refrigerated parcel vans that Amul wants are used by the Indian Railways to transport perishable commodities. While it is available on certain routes, a large number of vans are lying dysfunctional. Ahmedabad Division official told PTI that the South Western Railway has some refrigerated vans, which can be repaired and used to assist Amul.

The Quint reached out to the Indian Railways Ahmedabad division PRO Pradeep Sharma for his official comment on this meeting. This story will be updated with the response.
