“NTR’s granddaughter!” That was the only magical catchphrase that TDP leaders had when Suhasini Nandamuri started her maiden padayatra across Kukatpally on Tuesday. Touring parts of Hasmatpet, Congress and TDP workers were seen relying heavily on the ‘NTR family’ tag to introduce the rather tight-lipped campaigner to the ‘settler’ population of Kukatpally.

Over 250 supporters thronged the narrow streets of the Anjaiah Nagar in Old Bowenpally, from where Suhasini started her rally after offering prayers at a local temple. “Our focus will be on providing 2-BHK houses and ensuring regular water supply,” she said speaking to Express. Touring over 10 colonies, Suhasini promised to address issues of the constituency if voted to power. New to the political scene, her party workers to it upon themselves to explain her background to curious onlookers, her links to actors Balakrishna and Junior NTR.

All that Telangana could achieve in the last four years was a debt of Rs 2.2 lakh crore and this was due to the wrong priorities of caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, alleged former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

“I had great expectations from KCR but he wasted his energies concentrating on things other than governance,” the senior Congress leader said at a press conference here. Reeling out ‘failures’ of the government, he referred to promises of 22 lakh double bedroom houses , 3 acres land to Dalits, 12 percent reservation to minorities and Scheduled Tribes and free education from KG to PG.

“This state of economy in Telangana is best captured by one number. After five years of TRS government, Telangana has a debt of Rs 2.2 lakh crore,” he said adding “The TRS has grossly over promised and grossly under performed.”

As the deadline for withdrawal of nominations will expire on Thursday, the leadership of Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) has made no serious attempt to mollify the rebels, who have filed their papers, with a view to ensure that they pulled out.

Unlike the Congress, which reached out to all the rebels, the TRS top leaders reportedly did not take the pain to talk to them and see that they did not cut into the vote of the party by their presence. Barring, minister in caretaker government KT Rama Rao, who reportedly spoke to a TRS rebel Kotha Manohar Reddy in Maheswaram constituency, the party apparently ignored all the others who entered the fray after having been denied ticket.

Sources said the leadership could not address the rebel problem as it was too busy with campaign. They said the problem was not unmanageable because only half-a-dozen candidates who could make a marked difference to the result had filed nominations.

The researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad are developing a smartphone-based sensor to detect adulteration in milk. They have developed a detector which changes colour according to the acidity of the milk and algorithms loaded on to mobile phones can detect this change.

The research, undertaken by a team led by Prof Shiv Govind Singh, Department of Electrical Engineering and comprising Dr. Soumya Jana and Dr Siva Rama Krishna Vanjari, Associate Professors in the Department of Electrical Engineering, was published in the November issue of Food Analytical Methods journal.

Speaking about their research, Prof Shiv Govind Singh said since most techniques used to detect adulteration require expensive setup and can not be converted into low-cost easy-to-use devices, the mass appeal is missing.
