1. BJP Seeks EC Ban on Kamal Haasan for Godse Remark

The BJP on Monday moved the Election Commission seeking a 5-day ban on renowned actor and MNM President Kamal Haasan for describing Nathuram Godse, who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi, as the first Hindu terrorist in independent India.

The complaint has been filed by BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay, saying the statement was intended to outrage religious feelings of millions of Hindus. Haasan was speaking at an election rally for his party candidate in Aravakurichi Assembly constituency where by-elections will be held on 19 May. Haasan according to the complaint, said: "The first terrorist post India's independence is a Hindu."

Ever wondered how punctual the Chennai Metro trains are? Turns out that, despite the signalling failures that strike the system, the trains have recorded a punctuality rate of over 98% for the last four years now.

Chennai Metro, built at a cost of Rs 14,600 crore, began its first service four years ago in the 8-km stretch between Koyambedu and Alandur. Since then, trains have recorded a punctuality rate of 98.01%, 99.43%, 99.78% and 99.6% for the years 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), even the last four months this year, there has been an average of nearly 99% punctuality of trains.

Around 20 sovereigns of jewellery were burgled from retired IAS officer Leena Nair’s house at Padi on Saturday night. Nair is currently serving as an administrative member of the Tamil Nadu Real Estate Appellate Tribunal.

Police said she was sleeping on the first floor of her house. “Miscreants entered the house through the back-door and decamped with around 20-sovereign gold and Rs 5,000 in cash from the cupboard kept on the ground floor,” said police personnel. The incident came to light on Sunday morning when the worker at the house spotted the cupboard broken open.

4. Sasikala to Be Questioned on 28 May

The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Court in Egmore here on Monday adjourned the questioning of former AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala to 28 May in a case booked under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act against her.

Last Thursday, the Madras High Court set aside an order passed by the ACMM on 29 April directing the Superintendent of the Central prison in Bengaluru to produce the jailed Sasikala, before the court on 13 May for questioning. The High Court permitted her to appear through videoconferencing.

In a tragic incident, a one-and-a-half-year-old boy who fell from the terrace of a house at Choolaimedu died in hospital on Sunday. Police said that on 4 May, Mohammed Nazeer was sitting on the terrace watching his two older siblings play with a ball.

“The victim’s brother had dropped the ball down and gone to take it when Mohammed peeped from the terrace and fell down,” said a police officer. The parents of the child – Moideen, a car driver, and Bhanu – rushed him to the Institute of Child Health and Hospital, Egmore, where he succumbed on Sunday.
