1. Brain Behind ‘Thak Thak’ Gang Arrested

One of the creators of the notorious ‘thak thak’ gang has been arrested by the crime branch. Regarded as ‘Guruji’ among criminals, the 48-year-old accused was nabbed with Rs 8 lakh, which was stolen from a businessman. Under the ‘thak thak’ modus operandi, criminals steal from cars by getting the driver out on pretext of checking his vehicle. The accused was intercepted when he was returning to Delhi from Kolkata after executing a number of heists.

Joint commissioner (crime), Alok Kumar, said that the suspect Kanhaiyan belongs to Madurai but had made his base in Delhi’s Inderpuri. Kanhaiyan would send his gang members to other states to commit crime and then flew in there once a large amount of booty was collected.

2. Bengal Teenager Accused of Raping Two-Year-Old Girl

A 17-year-old boy is on the run after he allegedly raped a neighbour’s two-and-half-year-old daughter at Canning in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Saturday, 17 March, police said on Sunday.

Police have detained the boy’s father for questioning and started a hunt to catch the suspect. A case was registered under the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.

“The accused took the girl to his home and this simple act did not raise any suspicion in her family. But she was in great pain when she returned home by evening. When her family members prodded her to know what’s wrong, she told them what she went through,” the officer said.

“The family then reported the crime to the police and an FIR was lodged. By then, the accused ran away from his home,” the officer said.

3. Father-Son Duo Held for ‘Duping’ 2 People of Rs 1.15 Crore

The Mumbai police have arrested a father-son duo for allegedly duping an Andheri-based businessman after promising him flats at cheap rates.

Police said the complainant, Suresh Kothari, as well as his relative, were duped to the tune of Rs 1.15 crore.

“Around six years ago, one of Kothari’s friends informed him that the accused duo were constructing a residential building at JB Nagar in Andheri east. The complainant then went to the plot and checked the area, along with his relative,” an officer from the Andheri police station said.

Both the complainants booked a one-bedroom flat and a two-bedroom flat, at Rs 88 lakh and Rs 1.22 crore, respectively.

“Later, they were informed that the builder had never booked a flat in their names. Instead, the accused reinvested their money on something else, following which they approached police and handed in a complaint application with the police station,” an officer said.

Later, during the course of their investigations, police found the location of the accused duo and arrested them for alleged cheating and criminal breach of trust. The accused were identified as 73-year-old Arun Zaveri and his 41-year-old son, Chintan Zaveri, both residents of JVPD. They were produced in court and later remanded to judicial custody.

4. Man Held for Chopping Woman’s Hand, Fingers

The police arrested a 40-year-old man for chopping the fingers and the hand of a woman in Gummidipoondi on Saturday, 17 March. The police said he resorted to the the crime as the woman’s husband was having an affair with his wife.

According to the police, Shankar, 40, a driver in a private company is married to Sathya and the couple have two children. They reside in Selliamman Nagar in Gummidipoondi.

Sheik, 35, a tailor, and his wife Shakila, 28, too live in the locality.

Sathya and Sheik were allegedly having an affair for two years. “Shankar had warned his wife. On 15 March, he got furious on seeing them together,” said a senior police officer. On Saturday, Shankar confronted Shakila in a drunken state.

“He took out a knife and cut her right hand and four fingers of her left hand before fleeing,” said a police officer. Shankar was nabbed in the evening. Shakila is recuperating in the hospital.

5. Constable Arrested for ‘Sexually Harassing’ Woman

A police constable was arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a 33-year-old woman from Parel. According to the police, the woman had registered a case of sexual harassment in April 2017, following which the constable was arrested but later released on bail.

After his release, he had allegedly resumed harassing the girl and her family. The Constable has been identified as Shailesh Kadam, who was suspended from the police force four years ago after a case of sexual harassment was registered against him at Juhu police station.

According to the police, Kadam has six cases of sexual harassment registered against him.

Police said Kadam would allegedly post lewd comments on Facebook and WhatsApp. On 16 March, Kadam posted a WhatsApp status update using the woman’s nickname.

“After Kadam threatened the woman, she came to the police station and registered a case against him. A team was dispatched and the suspended constable was arrested from his residence,” said senior Inspector Dattatray Patil.

Kadam has been booked under Sections 354 (D) (stalking), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 500 (defamation) and 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) of the IPC along with 67(A) of the Information Technology Act. He will be produced in Bhoiwada court on Monday, 19 March.

6. 35-Yr Old Arrested for Raping 5-Yr-Old Girl

The Kapurbawdi police on Sunday, 18 March, arrested a man for allegedly raping a five-year-old girl and dumping her at a secluded place in Thane.

The girl was found by a local resident who alerted police Saturday evening. The accused has been identified as Suman Nandkumar Jha, 35, who used to work nearby the girl’s residence in Bhandup.

“According to the girl, he lured her away from her house by promising her ice-cream. He told her he would take her to get an ice cream and took her to Azaad Nagar in Thane,” said a senior officer from Kapurbawdi police station.

The girl was rescued by the police when they were alerted by a local resident in Brahmand area. On Sunday afternoon, police finally arrested Jha from his house in Thane.

“He was arrested and interrogated. He has confessed to his crime. We shall present him in court Monday. It is probable that he has raped multiple girls. We are interrogating him. We have also circulated his picture to other police stations if it matches their record,” said a senior officer.

7. Man Stabs Woman After She Rejects His Marriage Offer

The Manickpur police have arrested a man who allegedly stabbed a 27-year-old woman for rejecting his marriage proposal. The woman is being treated for her injuries at a private hospital in Vasai.

The accused, Vikas Madhukar Shinde, 39, is a resident of Parsiwadi in Ghatkopar, and was in love with the woman since the last three months.

Shinde was angry at the woman after she rejected Shinde’s marriage proposal for a suitor found by her parents. On Saturday, 17 March, Shinde went to the woman’s workplace in Vasai, and tried to convince her to marry him. When she yet again refused the proposal, Shinde stabbed her with a knife which he had brought along, said a Manickpur police official.

Hearing the woman scream for help, her colleagues rushed to her aid, and nabbed Shinde. They handed him over to the police and admitted the woman to the hospital.

The Vasai court on Sunday remanded Shinde to police custody.

8. TV Showroom Employee Shot at by Trio

A 26-year-old man working at a TV showroom was shot at in southeast Delhi's Okhla, police said on Sunday, 18 March.

Murari Lal Thakur and Mohan Lal were returning home with their employer Sandeep Anand last night. After dropping off Mohan, three men started chasing Murari and Sandeep, they said.

The accused demanded money from the two. When the duo denied having any money, the culprits shot at Murari and fled away with a bag containing clothes and some documents , police said.

Murari was rushed to a hospital by his employee, they said.

Police is scanning the CCTV footage to identify the accused.

9. Fake ‘ATS Man’ Steals Car to ‘Nab Terrorist’

A man posing as an Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) officer allegedly stole a travel agent’s car on the pretext of catching a terrorist and cheated him of Rs 7 lakh.

The accused used the vehicle for four years without paying its owner anything, and recently fled with it. According to the police, 39-year-old Dhirendra Vikram Singh, who runs Sun City Travels in Powai, went to Mumbai four years ago to meet a friend who was injured in an accident. There he met a man who introduced himself as an ATS officer, Rajesh Kumar Upadhyay.

“Upadhyay took my car claiming he needed it to catch a terrorist. Initially, he said that he would use the car and just pay for the diesel, but after I insisted, we agreed on the rent charges. But he kept using the car and never paid anything, so after four years he owed me Rs 3 lakh as rent,” said the complainant in his statement to police.

Singh tried contacting him for several days but was unable to reach him on the phone. When Singh went to his residential address, he learnt that Upadhyay didn’t live there. “I realised that I was duped after I went to the Thane ATS unit, where they informed me that no one with the name Upadhyay has ever worked with there,” said Singh. Upadhyay has been booked under Sections 170 (impersonating a public servant), 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code.
