In a video that has gone viral on social media, a student can be seen being beaten black and blue by a teacher at Basaveshwar Pre University College in north Bengaluru’s Rajajinagar.

The incident took place on Tuesday, 15 October, according to The Quint’s sources.

In the mobile recording of the incident, the enraged teacher can be seen thrashing the student with a bag first and then with a stick.

The attacker has been identified as Harish, a guest lecturer of the private college in Rajajinagar. According to police sources, the student was assaulted for cracking a joke against the lecturer during the class. The lecturer who lost his temper is seen slapping and hitting the student several times. The entire episode was recorded on a mobile phone by one of his classmates.

Officials at the Rajajinagar police told The Quint they received the video only three days after the incident. A police complaint is yet to be registered by the student or his family.

The police said they have sent a notice to the college. “We have asked the principal to provide the details of incident and the information on the lecturer,” said the official.

Police said the student has not been coming to college since the incident was reported, while the lecturer was suspended. The official added that after contacting the student’s family, further action will be taken.
