Sushma Thanks Emir of Sharjah For Pardoning Indian Prisoners

The royal decree was announced after Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held discussions with the Sultan.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj took to Twitter to thank the Emir of Sharjah Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi for pardoning 149 Indian prisoners accused of minor offences. She thanked him for his “kind gesture”.

The royal decree was announced after Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held discussions with the Sultan at the former’s official residence in Cliff House,

According to Times of India, the Sultan announced on Tuesday that the Indian nationals serving prison terms for non-serious crimes would be released.

The Kerala chief minister took to Facebook announce that the royal decree not only pardoned these prisoners but also allowed them to remain and work in Sharjah. In his post he said that the people of Kerala appreciated his gesture “wholeheartedly”.

The Sultan arrived in Kerala on Sunday for a five-day visit to the state.
