Sonia Gandhi Takes Ill During Shimla Visit, Flown Back to Delhi

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who had come to Shimla to inspect her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's house that is under-construction, complained of restlessness, following which she was flown to Delhi on Friday, 23 March.

Gandhi reportedly complained of restlessness on Thursday night and reportedly declined to go to the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla for treatment, the New Indian Express reported. Thereafter, she was rushed to Chandigarh by road from Shimla.

Senior Medical Superintendent at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) Hospital Dr Ramesh Chand said he received a call from the doctor accompanying Sonia Gandhi asking for arranging an ambulance for her.

But she soon left in her own car and the ambulance along with a team of doctors joined the entourage on the way. She had a brief stop at Panchkula on her way to Delhi, Dr Chand said.

Dr Ramesh, who accompanied Sonia Gandhi till Chandigarh, said her condition was stable.

The 71-year-old has been reportedly unwell for months now. She was hospitalised in May and October 2017 and underwent a shoulder surgery in 2016.

Her visit to Shimla comes soon after 84th Congress Plenary which was held on 17 and 18 March.
