Senior SC Lawyer & Ex-MP Jagdeep Dhankhar Is The New WB Governor
He had quit Congress in 2003 to join the BJP.
Jagdeep Dhankhar, a senior advocate of Supreme Court has been appointed as the new Governor of West Bengal. Dhankhar will replace Keshari Nath Tripathi. He is among six newly appointed governors announced by the Centre.
Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee tweeted, welcoming Dhankhar to the state. She also said that she got to know of the appointment from the media.
Who is Jagdeep Dhankhar?
Jagdeep Dhankar, a senior advocate, Supreme Court is a former MLA from Kishangarh, Rajasthan and former Lok Sabha MP from Jhunjhunu, Rajsthan from 1989-91.
Between 1989 and 1991, Dhankhar served as a Minister in the Central Government.
He quit Congress in 2003 to join the BJP. “I have joined BJP because Vajpayee government had enhanced India's prestige internationally and also because the party has projected a woman as chief minister of the desert state," Dhankhar had said.
He has played an important role in maintaining reservation for Jats in Rajasthan.
Dhankhar’s appointment as governor could be a step to appease the Jat community in Rajasthan.
