Just days after Congress party president Rahul Gandhi tweeted in support of freedom of expression over the mention of Rajiv Gandhi in the web series Sacred Games, the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee member, Rajeev Sinha, withdrew his police complaint against the Netflix series.

Sinha, who had filed a police complaint stating that the series used derogatory language and insulted the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, withdrew his complaint on Monday. Rahul Gandhi had tweeted on Saturday stating that, “BJP/RSS believe the freedom of expression must be policed & controlled. I believe this freedom is a fundamental democratic right. My father lived and died in the service of India. The views of a character on a fictional web series can never change that. #SacredGames”

According to a report in The Indian Express, Sinha’s withdrawal letter said that he was inspired by Rahul Gandhi’s tweet and and learnt that “forgiveness is much bigger than anything else in this mortal world”. He also urged the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to make guidelines to prevent the use of abusive language against “great martyrs in the name of freedom of speech”.

Sinha also said that he agreed with Rahul Gandhi that Rajiv Gandhi’s “contribution and charisma is above such petty things”. He also added that “there is so much of hatred all around that we cannot promote intolerance”.
