Congress president Rahul Gandhi hinted at a mahagatbandhan ahead of the 2019 general elections, saying that a grand alliance would be formed to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing the media in Mumbai on Wednesday, 13 June, Gandhi said that he shared the sentiments of the citizens of the country.

‘Mahagathbandhan’ is a sentiment in people and not just politics. Whole nation is united against RSS and BJP.

Slamming the government for the rising fuel prices, Gandhi said that they were concerned only about rich businessmen.

“This government is only helping industrialists and big corporates and killing small businesses and farmers.”

Later in the day, the Gandhi scion visited Chandrapur where he met the family of Dadaji Khobragade, the rural inventor who revolutionised rice farming, reported PTI. Khobragade, 78, died in June after a prolonged illness.

Gandhi then addressed a chaupal (community) meeting in the village.

“Modi Govt Has Divided Society”

Addressing the party workers a day earlier on Tuesday, 12 June, Gandhi accused the Narendra Modi government of creating hatred and division in the society and betraying farmers as well as the youth in the country.

He also alleged that Modi was a "chowkidaar" only for a handful of industrialists and not the common man.

There is fear in Narendra Modi’s voice. There is even more fear in Jay Shah’s father (Amit Shah)... and that is why he is going here and there. In the last four years, the Modi government has created hatred and division in the society. Farmers and youth have been betrayed.

Gandhi expressed confidence that the Congress and the rest of the Opposition parties will defeat the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

“But the youth will have to be given jobs and farmers’ interests need to be protected. The prime minister asks what the Congress has done during it rule... Congress didn’t threaten and crush anybody. The party did not divide people over caste, religion and colour,” he said in Mumbai.

Iftar Party

Later on Wednesday evening, the Congress president will host his first iftar party since taking over as the party chief.
