1. Palghar Bridge Off-limits For Heavy Vehicles As Illegal Sand Mining Weakens Foundation

Rampant illegal sand dredging from the river bed has led to the development of cracks on one of the pillars of a bridge in Palghar.

As a result, heavy motor vehicles (HMV) now cannot use the bridge. Moreover, due to recalling of a tender, there has been immense delay in commencement of maintenance and repair of this bridge and the HMV restriction has been in place since December 2014. This bridge is situated over Vaitarna River in Palghar.

Cracks were observed on the bridge's foundation by an alert local, who informed the local authorities, which, in turn, alerted the PWD. PWD was prompt to get the pressure off the bridge by restricting HMV movement on it.

The BMC has been trying to take over open spaces from private trusts for a while now, and while it has been successful for the most part, some are still resisting. Of the 216 plots, BMC has taken possession of 187 plots while 30 are still in private control and many of the so-called caretakers are from Shiv Sena and BJP. A final notice to surrender these will be issued by the civic body on Monday but some are reluctant to do so as they want compensation for the expenditure they incurred to develop the plots.

The notices will be issued to trusts owned by Ramdas Kadam, minister of state for environment, who maintains a garden in Kandivli, Ravindra Waikar, minister of state for housing, who runs the Matoshree Meenatai Thackeray maidan in Jogeshwari and BJP MP Gopal Shetty, who manages the seven-acre Swatantra Veer Savarkar Udyan and the 10-acre Poisar Gymkhana on two municipal plots in Borivali West.

6. Pune Multiplexes Stall Marathi Film Screening Over Protests

Following security concerns, several multiplexes in Pune have decided against screening the National Award-winning Marathi film Dashakriya, which was going to release today. The film has been mired in controversy after right-wing organisations demanded a ban on the film arguing that "it hurts religious sentiments and portrays the Brahmins in poor light". Punekars only realised that the film wasn't running in theatres after they tried to book tickets online, and learned that the shows had been cancelled.

When contacted, Pushkaraj Chaphalkar from CityPride, Pune-based chain of theatres, said the bookings are currently on hold. "A few groups have been opposing the film and we don't want to get into any kind of trouble. We've just taken the step due to security issues. We will take a call by today afternoon," said Chaphalkar.

7. Pune: RTO Official Suspended For Illegally Certifying 74 Vehicles As Fit

A motor vehicle inspector with the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has been suspended after the transport department found him guilty of illegally clearing 74 vehicles for renewal of fitness certificate without adequate checks. The 74 automobiles were all public transport vehicles. This came to light after Pune-based businessman and activist Shrikant Karve, 63, moved a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in Bombay High Court in 2013. The incident dates back to the same year, when the accused, Dilip Mane, was posted in Solapur. According to Karve, Mane had claimed to check around 200 vehicles in a single day — an impossible number to cover for a single vehicle inspector. As many as 74 of these were public transport vehicles that he cleared without checking compliance. The high court came down heavily on the transport department for the fraud, following which, a notification was issued on November 14 announcing the suspension of Mane.
