1. Maharashtra Plan: Government Buildings To Go Green, Save Rs 119 Crore Per Year

Faced with a cash crunch, the Maharashtra government has decided to go green in a big way. It has set its sights on achieving an estimated Rs 119 crore annual savings, by making all existing government buildings energy efficient. The plan: it will take up retrofitting of conventional electrical appliances across 5,020 government buildings in the coming nine months.

Unable to bear upfront costs for the project, Maharashtra has secured funding from the Centre for the ambitious project. As part of the Centre’s initiative to ‘Make India Energy Efficient’, the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) — a joint venture of Public Sector Undertakings and the Union Power Ministry — will implement the project, bearing the capital costs.

“The project requires a total investment of Rs 325 crore. The EESL will bear the entire cost,” said a senior government source who did not want to be named.

The Bombay High Court has dismissed a sexual harassment complaint against Vodafone Essar Ltd and its former higher ups, but, at the same time, it has imposed a Rs 50,000 fine on the company – to be paid to the War Widows’ Association – for not having an internal complaints committee in place at the relevant time.

While passing the judgement last week, a division bench of Justices AA Sayed and MS Karnik, observed, “We do note here that the Respondent No 1 (Vodafone) had not followed the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in Vishaka as there was no Complaints Committee constituted at the relevant time.”

The case was filed by an employee who started working as Sales Operations Manager in 1994 with Max India Ltd, which later entered a joint venture and came to be called as Hutchison Max Telecom Pvt Ltd and is now known as Vodafone Essar Ltd. She was later designated as Manager, Customer Care, but terminated from service in August 2000.

She alleged that she was terminated because she did not yield to her Chief Operating Officer’s demands seeking sexual favours. She alleged that her immediate senior and another employee helped the COO put pressure on her. “Respondent No 2 (COO) started to use subtle pressures through these persons who were subordinate to him for canvassing to her the virtues of giving a little sex to achieve substantial progress in the organisation. She was getting more and more terrified at the thought that sooner than later she would be thrown out of her job,” the judgement notes. She had filed a case before the Labour court for being terminated for not yielding to her senior’s demands for sexual favour.

3. Tatas’ Rs 1,000-Cr Diwali Gift For Cancer Patients

Tata Trusts, led by Ratan Tata, has pledged Rs 1,000 crore and other resources to help the central government develop cancer-care facilities in five states, an initiative that promises to drastically improve access to treatment for thousands of patients.

The facilities in Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh will be created afresh or upgraded on the lines of Parel’s Tata Memorial Hospital, which attends to patients from across the country.

The hospital, the country’s top cancer-care centre, provides free or highly subsidised treatment in over 60 per cent of the cases. But the massive workload invariably leads to a long waitlist. Majority of the patients hail from struggling families which cannot afford to stay in an expensive city like Mumbai for a long time. Many quit the treatment midway. The new facilities will help tackle this problem.

4. Who Owns Pakeezah?

A movie, which survived 16 years of filming and relationship trials to become one of Indian cinema’s most iconic pictures, is now the subject of a highprofile and complex legal tussle.

DB Realty has filed a suit in the Bombay High Court claiming the rights of the 1972 classic Pakeezah, which was directed by Kamal Amrohi and starred Meena Kumari. The company has moved the suit through Mahal Pictures, which it acquired along with the landmark Kamalistan studio from Amrohi’s children seven years ago.

The children — Tajdar, Shandar and Rukshar —have contested the company’s assertion, saying Pakeezah was their father’s most personal work and it was not part of the Mahal Pictures deal.

DB Realty’s suit is primarily against Shemaroo Entertainment Ltd, which bought the film’s rights from the Amrohis in 2015. The Amrohis have joined Shemaroo to oppose the claim because they believe Shemaroo would do justice to their late father’s legacy.

The Bangur Nagar police have arrested three youths for filming a girl naked and then circulating the video among their friends. The incident happened when the girl went to the main accused's house to take rest after a night-out, as she was not feeling well. However, the cops are yet to arrest another girl, who was involved in posting the video on other WhatsApp groups.

According to the FIR filed by the victim's family in April this year, the accused, Himanshu Rathod, 23; Farroq Shekda, 21 and Sultan Vazir Shaikh, 24, had gone to a hookah parlour along with the victim on the day of the incident. After spending some time with them when the victim complained of headache, Himanshu suggested that she should stay at Sultan's house in Goregaon West for the night.

The victim had alleged that while she was asleep, Himanshu removed her clothes and filmed her. She also mentioned that he took off his clothes and shot a video by posing close to her. After this, he forwarded the video to his friends Sultan and Farroq. Around six months later, one of the accused forwarded it to Akansha, who then circulated it among her friends.

The cycling track idea has finally gathered momentum. Civic chief Ajoy Mehta last week asked ward officers of all 24 administrative wards to examine areas where cycling tracks can be developed and submit a report at the earliest, so that the city can finally have a cycling track network. However, whether the traffic issues play spoilsport for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is yet to be ascertained, said officials.

In a review meeting of all the department heads and ward officers earlier this month, the civic chief instructed all the ward officers to identify roads for cycling tracks. The BMC had proposed a 22-km long two-way cycling track along the sea, from NCPA to the sealink's Worli end on Saturdays and Sundays from 6am to 11am. But civic officials said that the traffic issues need to be considered.
