1. Onion Prices Dip Within 24 Hrs of CM Tough Talk

The retail price of onion dropped significantly within 24 hours of chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s sudden inspection at Jadubabu’s Bazar. The price, which hovered around Rs 150-160 per kg for last few days, dropped to Rs 120-130 per kg on Tuesday. However, thanks to steady supply of subsidised onion through retail shops, there were hardly any takers for the vegetable from retail outlets.

On Monday, Banerjee had asked the retailers to bring down the onion price below Rs 100 at any cost. She also warned against hoarding. The chief minister’s warning was followed up by multi-prong action by state agencies on Tuesday.

2. Muslim Outfits Want TMC to Do More Than Just Walk Out of Parliament

At least 14 Muslim organisations on Monday appealed to the Trinamool Congress to do more than just walking out of Parliament and up its ante against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, or CAB. They alleged that the walk-out by the TMC MPs in parliament during the tabling of various Bill inadvertently helps the BJP government at the Centre.

They warned that if this continues, the community may not support the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC. The organisations listed their demands during a press conference here.

“From our experience, we can say that the TMC has helped the Centre in passing bills by stepping out of Parliament. If this happens again, Muslims of this state will never support TMC,” said Abdul Ajij, member of Forum for Democracy and Communal Amity.

3. KMDA Visit After New Bridge Proposal Across Tolly’s Nullah

A new bridge across the Tolly’s Nullah at Naktala has been proposed by KMC ward councillor Anita Kar Majumder.

Engineers from Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) on Tuesday went to the spot to inspect whether a bridge could be set up at the place or not. The primary plan is to have a footover bridge that would have the minimum width to allow rickshaws, cycles and bikes to ply on it. The proposed spot is close the Naktala post office and Gitanjali Metro station.

Majumder said it was during former KMC mayor Sovon Chaterjee’s time that she had come up with the proposal. “It was primarily a request from some of the elderly residents, who said that it would be beneficial for them if a bridge can be set up on the canal at Naktala, as the gap between the two nearby bridges over the canal – Usha bridge and Bidhan Palli bridge – is about one km and elderly residents often have to take a longish route to cross over,” said Kar Majumder.
