1. 20-Year-Old Dalit Man Beaten Up in Captivity, Set Afire in Alleged Hate Crime

Police arrested three people, including two women, on Monday, 16 September for allegedly setting ablaze a 20-year-old Dalit man after locking him up inside a room in Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi district.

The man, identified only as Abhishek, was burnt to death on Saturday night in a possible hate crime over his relationship with a 19-year-old woman from a “higher caste”. The woman was one of the three people arrested, the other two being her uncle and aunt.

A senior police official said Abhishek was in a relationship with the woman for six years but the victim’s uncle, identified only by his first name Raju, said the crime was to avenge an old family enmity.

2. Man Held for Rape, Murder of 6-Yr-Old in Lucknow: Police

A 25-year-old man allegedly raped and tortured a six-year-old girl before killing her by slitting her throat in Lucknow on Sunday, 15 September, the Uttar Pradesh police said.

Senior police superintendent Kalanidhi Naithani said the accused held the girl captive for four hours and raped her when she went to give him water. He added the accused worked as a mason along with the girl’s father and frequented their house.

Additional police superintendent Vikas Chandra Tripathi said the girl’s post-mortem report confirmed the sexual assault and revealed the extreme brutality and injuries she had suffered.

3. Punjab Couple Shot Dead Outside House

A couple was shot dead outside their house in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district on Sunday morning with the police charging the woman’s relatives for the alleged hate crime and murder.

Amanpreet Kaur (23) and Amandeep Singh (24), fell in love and married in August 2018 but Kaur’s family did not accept the match, police said. The couple stayed at Naushehra Dhala village, 40 km from Tarn Taran, and near the India-Pakistan border.

The couple was returning home after praying at the local gurdwara near Chabhal town on Sunday morning, when three relatives of Kaur allegedly forced the couple into their car at about a kilometre away from their village, police said.

4. Man, Woman Beaten in Rajasthan, Hair Chopped off for Having Affair: Cops

A woman and a man were allegedly assaulted and their hair chopped off in Rajasthan's Nagaur district for having an affair, the police said on Monday, 16 September.

Both of them were allegedly assaulted by the woman's family, the police said.

In a video widely circulated on social media, a few people were seen assaulting and cutting the hair of a woman and a man.

"A video of a woman and a man being assaulted had gone viral. Police reached the spot to gather information about the incident. We are filing an FIR and taking further action," Superintendent of Police Vikas Pathak told news agency ANI.

5. Retired CRPF Soldier in Odisha Accused of Raping 11-Year-Old

A retired CRPF soldier was arrested on Monday, 16 September, for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl in Odisha's Jajpur district, the police said.

In her complaint, the girl's mother alleged that the accused had offered the girl chocolates, took her to a secluded place and raped her.

"According to the girl's mother, the child had gone to the market with the retired soldier and a neighbor to get her shoes repaired. The accused then took her to a secluded flour mill near the bazaar and raped her," the police said.

"He then allegedly threatened the girl with dire consequences, if she reported the matter," inspector in-charge Sukanta Kumar Patra said.

6. Gang-Raped in Moving Car, Says Muzaffarpur Sex Abuse Survivor

A woman who survived the horrific sexual exploitation detected at the Muzaffarpur shelter home last year, said she was abducted and gangraped on Saturday, 14 September. She is undergoing treatment at a local government hospital and has identified two of the four attackers. It is not known why despite the complaint of rape, she was sent for medical examination only on Sunday 24 hours after the attack. The medical report is yet to arrive.

In her complaint, the woman said she was walking on the road on Saturday evening, when four masked men in a Scorpio vehicle stopped by and dragged her in. They took turns to rape her inside the moving car and threw her out later.

7. 6 Injured in Alleged Mob Attack on Family at Aligarh Railway Station

Six members of a family were injured in an alleged mob attack at a railway station in UP's Aligarh, triggering protests by Aligarh Muslim University students who dubbed it an attempt to lynch them.

The attack took place following a fight Sunday as the family of Afsana Bano was getting off a train while some other passengers were trying to get into the same compartment, according to a complaint registered with the railway police.

A while later, about 30 people reached there and attacked Afsana Begum's family members, their complaint said.

Four family members suffered some injuries and were discharged from AMU's Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, while two others, Shafiq and Fahim, were admitted there.

8. UP BSP MLA Booked for Murder Attempt

A BSP MLA and 10 others were booked for attempt to murder after they allegedly assaulted a man over a property dispute in Ghaziabad Sunday, 15 September. According to the police, BSP MLA from Hapur’s Dhaulana, Aslam Chaudhary, was involved in the attack on Ashok Jain after he tried to carry out construction on a piece of land, of which he is the caretaker, in Ghaziabad’s Masuri.

“There is a plot of land nearly 500 metres from Masuri Police Station. The landowners have obtained the legitimate title of the land from the court and currently possess all legal documents. This was being objected to by villagers in the region. The politician was also part of the protest and the caretaker. As the injuries were of a serious nature, section 307 (attempt to murder) has been added,” said Neeraj Jadaun, SP (Rural), Ghaziabad.

9. Mumbai Police Hunt for Person Who ‘Duped Woman of Rs 3.6 Lakh’

The Bandra police are on the lookout for a person who allegedly duped a 32-year-old homemaker to the tune of Rs 3.6 lakh. The complainant was lured into believing that she had won a lottery of Rs 12.6 lakh and asked to pay the amount, police said.

They added that the woman, identified as Puja Dhetve, lives with her children in Bandra, while her husband works in Dubai.

According to the police, on 20 July, Dhetve received a message sent by a popular online shopping portal, which stated that she had won a lottery in the their lucky draw. “The fraudsters called her and asked her if she wanted to take a Tata Safari instead of cash,” an officer said, “but since she was in need of cash, she refused the car.”
