QCrime: Judge Arrested for Murder; Teenager Gangraped at Gunpoint

1. CBI Arrests Haryana Civil Judge for Wife’s Murder

The CBI has arrested a Civil Judge from Haryana, Ravneet Garg, in connection with the murder of his wife Geetanjali over three years after she was killed.

The CBI spokesperson said the then Chief Judicial Magistrate of Gurgaon was arrested in an ongoing investigation of a case related to the murder of his wife Geetanjali Garg whose bullet-riddled body was found on 17 July 2013 at police lines.

“A case was registered by CBI following the request of the Haryana Government and after notification by the Government of India,” the spokesperson said.

2. Ankur Panwar Sentenced to Death in Preeti Rathi Acid Attack

A special women’s court on Thursday sentenced a 25-year-old man to death for murdering a Delhi resident by hurling acid at her at Bandra Terminus in 2013. The sentencing comes a day after the accused Ankur Panwar was convicted by Judge AS Shende.

Both the prosecution and defence presented the arguments on quantum of sentence. While special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam sought the death sentence on the ground that the case fell in the rarest of rare category, defence advocate Apeksha Vora prayed for the minimum sentence of life, citing Panwar’s age, family background and lack of previous antecedents.

The victim, Preeti Rathi (23) had arrived in the city to join the Indian Navy as a nurse. The motive the court had accepted was the fact that Panwar was upset after Preeti had spurned his marriage proposal.

3. Rape Suspect Commits Suicide as Victim Flees

A 51-year-old rape suspect committed suicide after his 10-year-old victim escaped at Kovalam on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday evening. Police found a freshly-dug burial pit next to his house. The victim, a Class VI student, was admitted to SAT hospital with serious injuries.

Chandra Babu of Malayil house, Vellar picked up his neighbour, who had returned from school after an examination. He sexually violated the girl, who lost consciousness during the act. The suspect left her assuming she was dead, but the survivor got up and ran to her family.

They admitted her to the hospital and local police was alerted. Kovalam police, who reached the place, found the man hanging from the ceiling of his residence.

4. Two Women Brutally Murdered in Mizoram

Two women of Chhiarlung village in southern Mizoram’s Saiha district were found brutally murdered in their paddy fields late on Wednesday evening, the police said.

As the two women, N Sidei, 60 and Z Elizabeth, 32, did not return home last evening, their relatives and neighbours went looking for them and found them dead with multiple injuries near a hut. The two women had paddy fields in Mobyu area near the Myanmar border next to one another and shared the same hut.

Preliminary investigations suggested that the younger woman, whose body was lying naked with her hands tied behind her back, had been raped before she was killed.

5. Online Fraudsters Dupe Techie, 11 Victims So Far

When a 37-year-old IT professional became a victim of online fraud and went to file a police complaint, little did she expect that many similar cases were already registered at the station.

When Ruchitha (name changed) approached JC Nagar police station on Wednesday, she realised that the station in-charge was well aware of the modus operandi of the cyber criminals and narrated the chain of sequence even before she could explain.

Hers was the eleventh complainant registered in a span of just one week. A resident of Benson Town, Ruchitha believed that it was an inside job. They managed to retrieve all her account details and laid the trap and duped her of Rs 4760.

6. Teenaged Girl Gangraped at Gunpoint

A 14-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly gangraped at gunpoint by two youths in Jasoi village in Muzaffarnagar, police said.

According to a complaint filed by the girl’s father, Jan Mohammad and Mustakim forcibly took his daughter to the fields where they gangraped her at gunpoint.

A case has been registered against the two, following which Jan Mohammad was arrested, police said.

The girl has been sent for medical examination.

7. 51-Year-Old Held for Molesting Minor in Bengaluru

A 51-year-old security guard was held under POCSO Act by the RT Nagar police after he was allegedly found molesting an eight-year-old girl on Thursday.

The accused has been identified as Shrinivas, a resident of Dinnur and an ex-serviceman. According to police sources, the incident took place at an apartment on Dinnur Main Road, where the accused worked as a security guard.

A couple hailing from Nepal was also working in the same apartment as house keeping staff. The couple had, reportedly, brought their daughter along with them on Thursday. While their daughter was playing on the apartment premises, the couple was busy with work.

8. RPF Jawans Booked on Rape Charge

Four RPF jawans from the Central Railway were booked for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman after spiking her drink at Diva in Thane, police said on Thursday. DCP Railways (Central) Rupali Ambure said that the woman was raped in the RPF cabin at Diva on 14 January.

However, she lodged a complaint recently, after which the Thane Railway Police registered offence against the four accused.

The DCP said the accused have been booked under Sections 376-d (rape by one or more persons) 328 r/w 34 of the IPC.

9. Doctor Booked for Raping Patient in Delhi

A 55-year-old doctor was arrested for allegedly raping and threatening a 24-year-old patient at his clinic in south Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar, police said on Wednesday. The crime took place on Friday.

Sushil Munjal, a pulmonologist, was arrested on Saturday. He was later produced before a city court that sent him to Tihar jail. Munjal’s wife is a gynaecologist and the couple run a clinic in Lajpat Nagar Part-II, said police.

The woman, who lives with her family in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh, was undergoing treatment for throat infection at Munjal’s clinic for the past some weeks. The woman told police that on Friday, she reached Munjal’s clinic around 8 pm for a check-up.
