1. BSF Jawans Held for Amritsar Express Rape

Two men accused of raping a teenage girl on the Amritsar Express train have been arrested. Originally thought to be army men, the two are in fact from the BSF’s 125 Battalion and were posted in Agartala.

The teenage rape survivor has claimed that three men - the two BSF jawans and an army man, Manjrish Tripathi – forced her to drink liquor and then the BSF jawans raped her in the toilet of the train. have been arrested at Guwahati airport.

Tripathi reportedly provided clues that helped the police nab the two other accused at the Guwahati airport, reports The Times of India.

2. Ola Cab Driver Arrested For Rape

An Ola cab driver has been arrested in Bhopal for the alleged rape of a 28-year-old woman on December 29.

The woman, an employee of a private hospital, was picked up from her house, driven to a secluded spot and allegedly raped by the cab driver, Dipak Bamane, who threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone about it.

The woman, however, told her husband about the incident a few days later, after which the two approached the police.

Bamane lives near the victim’s house and possibly knew her according to Inspector Suryakant Awasthi of the Koh-e-Fiza police station.

3. Body of Woman Found at Metro Station

The body of a 33-year-old woman was found in the bushes behind the Ghitorni Metro station near Chhattarpur, with the woman’s hands tied and injury marks on her neck and arms, reports The Indian Express.

The police suspect that the woman was sexually assaulted before she was murdered as she was found partially undressed.

The police further said particles of “wood” had been detected during medical examination, suggesting that a “piece of wood had been used to assault her”. A postmortem will be conducted to determine the actual cause of death. A case of murder has been registered and investigations are on.

4. Nagpur: Three Arrested for Carrying Arms and Ammunitions

The Yavatmal police have arrested three men from Hyderabad for carrying arms and ammunitions in a car they were travelling in, reports The Indian Express.

Mohammad Masihuddin Owaisi (35), Mohammad Umar Gazi (27) and Mohammad Mirajuddin (22) were arrested after the police found 50 rounds of .22 bore and 10 rounds of 6030 bore, a pistol and detonators in their vehicle.

The arrest assumes significance against the backdrop of an incident in Pusad in September last year where a Muslim youth, Abdul Malik, had attacked a police constable protesting against the beef ban.

5. Order to Investigating Officers in Wake of Inmate Being Killed Inside a Police Van

The Indian Express reports an order has been issued by the Delhi Police directing all police stations and their respective investigating officers (IOs) to inform authorities of the criminal antecedents of any person being sent to Tihar Jail.

The decision comes a day after a 29-year-old Tihar inmate was beaten to death inside a jail van, by repeatedly being hit on the chest and head while pinned to the floor by three other inmates.

6. Man Held for Insurance Fraud

A 35-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly duping insurance companies by raising multiple insurance claims on the same car.

Ashiq Chaudhary, a class 12 pass out, has allegedly started duping insurance companies to earn easy money.

With the arrest, police claimed to have busted a gang of cheats and recovered two cars, a Hyundai i10 and Swift Dzire.

7. Woman Attacked by Unidentified Man in Delhi Mall

A 23-year-old woman was severely injured after she was allegedly attacked by an unidentified man at a prominent shopping mall in east Delhi on the New Year’s Eve, the police said.

The incident took place on the evening of December 31 when the woman came out of the mall’s washroom and the unidentified man allegedly pushed her and attacked with a blunt object, reports The Tribune.

8. Two Arrested in Bihar Engineer’s Murder Case

The police have arrested two accused in the murder of engineer Ankit Kumar Jha according to Superintendent of Police (SP) Rakesh Kumar.

Ankit’s body was recovered from a village under Barati police outpost area in Vaishali district on December 29. The accused, Prabhat Kumar and Ramji Patel, had business and financial dealings with Jha, an engineer with Reliance IT.

9. Chandigarh Sees Rise in Crime Against Women

Chandigarh is witnessing a rise in crime against women, according to the data from the Chandigarh Police, reports The Times of India.

Data reveals that each month on an average, six women are raped, 10 women are molested and 10 women harassed on the pretext of dowry.

The number of rape cases lodged has also seen a rise in numbers. In 2015, 77 cases were lodged as compared to 64 in the previous year. Other than that, there were 99 cases of molestation, 126 of harassment by husband, five dowry deaths, 10 cases of sexual harassment and 156 kidnapping cases in 2015.
