1. AIADMK Drama: Sasikala Sacked, Jaya to Be ‘Eternal Gen Secretary’

Amid constant political turmoil, the AIADMK passed a resolution to boot out Sasikala as interim general secretary, and her nephew TTV Dinkaran as the deputy general secretary, in a party general council meeting held on 12 September.

The eighth resolution adopted by the general council (GC) declared that the post of temporary general secretary stands forfeited and Sasikala has been expelled as general secretary. However, the duo will continue to retain primary membership in the party.

The AIADMK GC, comprising of 2140 members and 290 Executive Council members, also decided that none of the appointments made by TTV Dinakaran would be binding on the party.

2. Narrow Escape for Children as Van Tumbles into Ditch

Sixteen schoolchildren had a narrow escape when a private school van carrying them fell into a ditch in Mogappair due to negligent driving.

The accident occurred on 12 September at 1.45 pm when the van was bringing students back from school.

Police said the van was engaged by parents to bring the children from Vellammal School every day.

AIADMK (Amma, PTA) leader and Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami’s on 12 September launched a direct and strong attack on sidelined leader TTV Dinakaran at the party’s general council meeting here saying his government cannot be shaken “even if a thousand Dinakarans come.”

“Dinakaran, who is he? Where did he go for the past 10 years? He had gone on an exile. Dhinakaran was removed from the party’s primary membership by Jayalalithaa. He is questioning us today. Does he have the locus standi to call you and me traitors?” Palaniswami asked.

4. Coast Clean-Up This Saturday

Organised by Indian Maritime Foundation (IMF), Chennai India (South), in partnership with Ocean Conservancy, USA, the effort will see over 8,000 persons cleaning up 350 km of the Indian coastline.

5. Stalin Approaches HC for Floor Test

DMK working president MK Stalin on 12 September filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Tamil Nadu Governor as well as the Speaker to hold a trust vote in the Assembly forthwith. An affidavit, filed in support of the yet to be numbered petition, claimed that it was illegal for a “minority government” to take major policy decisions. He insisted that the trust vote be conducted under the supervision of an independent observer to be appointed by the High Court.

6. HC Orders Doctor to Hoist National Flag for a Week

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of a Government Hospital at Ambur in Vellore district was caught on camera talking on his mobile phone when the national anthem was played on August 15. The Madras High Court has now made him hoist the national flag every day for a week, salute it and also sing the anthem under police watch.

Justice PN Prakash had imposed the conditions while granting anticipatory bail to A Kennedy, the CMO, in a case booked by Ambur Town Police under Section 2 of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act of 1971.

Even as film producers complain that high GST and local body taxes and a cap on ticket prices are cutting into their profits, ticketing websiteticketnew.com, and the producer of Thupparivalan , actor Vishal, have announced that those who buy tickets through the site and its mobile application will get a Rs 75 discount.

With the website’s CEO claiming that it commands a 50 percent market share, the new scheme is likely to set off a turf war between major players in the ticketing business.
