Speaking in the Vidhan Sabha on Monday, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh announced free education for girls from nursery to the PhD level in the state’s government institutions, reported Hindustan Times.

Further, the government has also promised to provide free textbooks to all government school students, and to introduce pre-primary classes (nursery and LKG) in these schools from the next academic session. As a part of these education reforms, the government has also promised to introduce free Internet in 13,000 primary schools, and 48 government colleges.

According to the report, the Chief Minister has stated that his administration will give top priority to education, highlighting the fact that his government has had to take on the responsibility of a weak education system.

Despite budgetary constraints, the state government has promised to bolster the education department, and is set to launch five new colleges within this financial year.

Captain Singh’s initiative comes due to his concern about the huge gap in the quality of education that children receive, with only the privileged few being able to access quality education.

The initiative will also see online textbooks that can be downloaded for free. Moreover, English-medium education will also be on offer at government institutions. The HT report also claims that English-medium education will be launched in at least two primary, middle, high and senior secondary schools in each educational sector from July.

Among the many educational reforms are also two new Sainik schools in Gurdaspur and Mansa, and an institute to provide military training to the youth.
